Brushing and flossing your teeth covers the basics of your general oral health, but did you know that your mouth can benefit from mouthwash too?

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about the basics of mouthwash first.

Basic Information about Mouthwash

Not a lot of people know the basics about mouthwash, so here are some things that you should know about it according to the American Dental Association:

  • Types of Mouthwash
    • Cosmetic
      • Cosmetic mouthwashes don’t typically do anything improve your overall oral health.
      • They are made specifically to make your teeth appear better. Think something along the lines of whitening mouthwash.
    • Therapeutic
      • Therapeutic mouthwashes have active ingredients that help kill bacteria.
      • Depending on the mouthwash formulation some may be purchased over the counter at the grocery store and retail stores like Target or Walmart or needs a prescription.

Benefits of Using Mouthwash

Both cosmetic and prescription mouthwashes benefit your oral hygiene depending on your goals and needs.

1.Whiter Teeth

If you want whiter and brighter teeth then you can purchase whitening mouthwash that you can use 2x a day before you brush your teeth. Pair with a whitening toothpaste for maximum effects.

2. Helps Heal Gingivitis

If you suffer from swollen, puffy or if your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth then you have gingivitis. This happens when bacteria builds on the outside of your teeth. You should purchase a mouthwash that focuses on relieving these symptoms. You should notice a difference in your gums after using this type of mouthwash after a few days. Follow the instructions on the bottle for the best results.

3. Eliminates Bad Breath

Bad breath can and does happen to everyone. Whether it’s morning breath, bad breath from eating a stinky meal that includes onions, garlic, or coffee breath, then you want to purchase a mouthwash that is scented with mint and focuses on killing bad breath.

4. Prevents Tooth Decay

Tooth decay happens when our enamel is weakened. This typically happens with what we eat especially if they are sugary or sticky. If your teeth are not cleaned properly then it increases your risk of tooth decay. Purchase a mouthwash that has the active ingredients to help prevent tooth decay.

5. Reduces/Controls Plaque

Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the outside of our teeth.  It is something that happens to all of us. Plaque is the main reason anyone can develop cavities or gum disease. Purchase a mouthwash that can help reduce or control plaque formation.

As always, mouthwashes aren’t meant to replace visiting the dentist for these symptoms. Please consult with your dentist to know which is the right mouthwash for your oral hygiene needs.

Special Note: Children under 6 should not consume or swallow mouthwash.
