Dental implants are essentially permanently-affixed false teeth. Properly fashioned and installed dental implants consist of a ceramic “tooth” that is affixed to a metal “root” fused to the jaw bone. Although dental implants can be more expensive than other options—and although they take longer to install—they are sometimes the best option for replacing missing teeth.
If you need to replace one or more teeth, and you want the result to look, feel, and operate exactly like your natural teeth, dental implants are the best option. They are individually installed—no bridges—and will be virtually indistinguishable from your real teeth. In fact, once your dental implants are finished, it is easy to forget that you even have them!
Some types of orthodontic constructions, such as veneers, must be carefully cared for in order to prevent them from coming off of the tooth. In contrast, a dental implant will never come off—the metal rod to which the “tooth” is affixed has been permanently grafted into your jaw bone.
You won’t need to engage in any special maintenance, like you might if you were using dentures or some other similar form of tooth replacement. Simply care for your dental implants the same way you care for your natural teeth, and they will last for decades to come.
When you come in for your normal cleaning, we will be sure to closely inspect your dental implants to ensure that they are operating correctly. We will clean them just as we clean your normal teeth, and that should be all the maintenance you need.
