When you have a tooth extracted, you need to take care of the extraction site. This means keeping food out of the socket, and only eating foods that won’t hurt your mouth. You need to avoid using straws and smoking cigarettes at all costs during this time. If you suck on anything, it can dislodge the clot, causing your bleeding to restart.

Every few hours, you are going to need to perform a salt water rinse. This involves taking warm water, adding a little salt, and rinsing with the solution once the salt dissolves. This rids your mouth of bacteria, and helps speed up healing following a dental extraction. After the first 24 hours, you will also want to brush your teeth like normal. Just make sure you are careful around the socket so you don’t restart the bleeding. Also, avoid using any type of mouthwash that contains alcohol, as that could hurt and dry out your mouth.
